UC San Diego’s ArtPower and Celebrate AMERI’KANA presents Los Texmaniacs, Gaby Moreno, Making Movies, Renee Goust, AMERI’KANA All-Stars, and more in a day-long festival on August 24. Founded by the Latin Grammy-nominated band Making Movies, Celebrate AMERI’KANA is a traveling festival honoring the diverse colors of American music.
Celebrate AMERI’KANA unites world-class musicians with Grammy award-winning and nominated talent from diverse musical backgrounds. Los Texmaniacs, known for their fusion of Tex-Mex conjunto, Texas rock, and blues, have extensive experience touring and recording with Flaco Jimenez of Texas Tornados fame, Los Super Seven, and the Rolling Stones. While Max Baca has participated in eleven Grammy-winning projects, the band won their first Grammy in 2010 and received a nomination for their 2019 Smithsonian Folkways recording, Borders y Bailes, featuring Lyle Lovett and Rick Trevino. Gaby Moreno is a Latin Grammy-winning and Emmy-nominated Guatemalan singer-songwriter and producer. Moreno has shared the international stage with pop music luminaries such as Bono, Andrea Boccelli, Tracy Chapman, Ani DiFranco, Punch Brothers, Hugh Laurie, Buena Vista Social Club, Calexico, David Gray, and many more. Her work is also featured in the theme song for Parks and Recreation, the acclaimed film “Radical”, the newest Netflix show ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’, Disney’s Elena of Avalor, and many other projects.
The Latin Grammy-nominated Panamanian band Making Movies trails the bridge between the traditional and the new. Creating their unique, distinctive approach to making music. The band collaborated with Rubén Blades on the single “No Te Calles,” included in NPR’s Best of 2019 list and the opening track of Blades’ album Paraiso Road Gang, nominated for the 2019 Latin Grammy Album of the Year. They have toured with names such as Los Lobos, Ozomatli, Hurray For the Riff Raff, Thievery Corporation, and more. Mexican-American singer-songwriter Renee Goust brings Mexican music to the forefront with her acclaimed work featured in Billboard, Rolling Stone, and El País, to name a few. She has collaborated with organizations such as the United Nations, Amnesty International, and LGBTQ+ marches in New York, Mexico City, and La Paz, Bolivia.
The collective AMERI’KANA All-Stars presents a high-energy show that blends the folkloric and cutting edge and features a rotating cast of incredible leaders in their respective genres.
