SUMMARY:Meshell Ndegeocello
DESCRIPTION:Opener: Deejay Dandelion\nPraised by the New Yorker as “the most significant bassist this country has produced since the advent of Charles Mingus and Flea\,” Meshell Ndegeocello makes her ArtPower debut with her GRAMMY-winning album No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin. \nThe prescience of James Baldwin is alive nearly forty years after his passing\, a testament to his enduring impact. A prolific writer\, his essays\, novels\, plays\, and poetry have assessed and often reproached the human condition. As an activist\, his oratory prowess in the 1960s was bar none\, lending his outspoken views on Black oppression with profundity and eloquence. Born in New York City on August 2\, 1924\, this year marks the centennial of the eminent writer\, a momentous occasion that is celebrated by the release of one of Meshell Ndegeocello’s most intrepid efforts to date: No More Water: The Gospel Of James Baldwin. \nWith No More Water\, Ndegeocello embarks on a prophetic musical odyssey that transcends boundaries and genres\, delving headfirst into race\, sexuality\, religion\, and other recurring themes explored in the celebrated writer’s canon. Following 2023’s The Omnichord Real Book\, her acclaimed debut for Blue Note Records which won the inaugural GRAMMY Award for Best Alternative Jazz Album\, the multi-instrumentalist\, singer\, songwriter\, and producer renders an immersive and palpable document that is as sagacious\, unabashed\, and introspective as Baldwin was in life.

SUMMARY:Camila Fernández
DESCRIPTION:Camila Fernández has established herself as an unstoppable force in the Mexican regional genre. Her undeniable talent and passion for music have led her to become the lone female voice of the Fernández Dynasty. Born on November 30\, 1997\, in Guadalajara\, Jalisco\, Mexico\, Camila’s love for music was evident from her earliest days. At the tender age of four\, her powerful voice and stage presence impressed everyone on every stage she graced\, whether it was in musical theater\, school choirs\, religious pageants\, or performances. Her destiny was clear: music was her path. \nHer musical influences encompass icons like her grandfather Vicente Fernández\, her father Alejandro Fernández\, Juan Gabriel\, Rocío Dúrcal\, José Alfredo Jiménez\, and Eugenia de León\, who have left an indelible mark on her style and passion for music. \nHer new album\, “Camila Fernández\,” includes 20 tracks\, with 10 original songs and 10 covers\, all connected by the theme of love in its various forms. Camila penned 9 of the original songs\, demonstrating her creative ambition and deep commitment to her music. This creative ambition is reflected in the musical development of her new album\, which evokes the nostalgia of Mexican mariachi and the sonic innovation of the 21st century. Camila is an artist with a promising future\, capable of reinventing the past through her ranchera passion conveyed in every verse. \nThanks to her unique qualities\, Camila Fernández is undeniably the best representative of the new Mexican regional music: a revolutionary woman who blends the best of multiple worlds to create an authentic and distinct style. Her music is a gift for Mexican music enthusiasts and an inspiration for future generations. \n\nMariachi Continental de San Diego is San Diego’s premiere Mariachi.

SUMMARY:Patrick Watson
DESCRIPTION:Opener: La Force\nPatrick Watson composes\, performs\, and records his albums with his long-time bandmate and collaborator and multi-instrumentalists Mishka Stein and Olivier Fairfield. The Canadian artist reached gold and platinum status in over multiple countries (including five certified gold albums in Canada)\, and his shows sell out around the world. Over the course of his career\, Patrick has retained the uncanny ability to coexist in mainstream pop-culture spaces and on the avant-garde fringes. Patrick’s songs have been featured in primetime crowd-pleasers like Grey’s Anatomy and This Is Us\, as well as in multiple arthouse films from Denis Villeneuve (Polytechnique)\, Wim Wenders (Perfect Days) \,and Philippe Falardeau (C’est pas moi\, je le jure!) and more. He’s an artist who’s as comfortable performing impromptu pop-up shows on the train tracks in a Quebec mining town as he is leading the BBC Orchestra at London’s prestigious Barbican. He’s an in-demand composer with over 15 film scores under his belt. He was awarded the prestigious inaugural Impact Award at the 2024 Canadian Sync Awards. Watson’s viral single “Je te laisserai des mots” became the first French song to accumulate 1 billion streams on Spotify. \nBut whether you discovered Patrick Watson through your local indie record shop\, a movie soundtrack\, a social-media video\, a European music festival\, his hit collaboration with Cinematic Orchestra (2007’s “To Build a Home”)\, or through his appearance alongside Patti Smith and Michael Stipe at the 2021 Pathway to Paris all-star benefit concert\, his music has a similar effect on all who enter his kaleidoscopic sound-world. The songs of Patrick Watson transform your everyday surroundings into your own imaginary wonderland\, translating stress and sorrow into joy\, and helping you find peace within the chaos of modern life. \nAbout Uh Oh album\nWhat is life but an endless series of “uh oh”s? From our earliest childhood accidents to our most overwhelming adult anxieties\, it’s a little phrase that looms large throughout our existence. En route to making his new album\, Montreal indie-pop maestro Patrick Watson was faced with the biggest “uh oh” a professional singer could endure. \nOne morning in the winter of 2023\, Patrick woke up to discover that his voice—the angelic instrument that propelled 2006’s carnivalesque art-rock opus Close to Paradise to the Polaris Music Prize winner’s podium and turned his piano lullaby “Je te laisserai des mots” into the first Francophone track ever to surpass a billion streams on Spotify—had gone completely kaputt. \n“Obviously\, I like singing for people\, but I was really enjoying my Modular [synth] and diving into instrumental music”—a natural inclination for Patrick\, who’s composed over 15 film scores to date. “But then I was like\, ‘Oh\, it’d be cool to write songs for all these different singers that I really want to hear sing—I’ll find my way out of this situation that way.’ Because my voice wasn’t supposed to come back. And when it did\, I just thought having all these other singers featured was still a cooler idea for a record than me singing alone.

SUMMARY:The Making of Our Planet: Frozen Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Host: Sophie Lanfear\nModerated by Joshua Jones\, Scripps Institution of Oceanography\n“This has been a true labour of love for hundreds of filmmakers\, cinematographers\, conservationists\, editors\, musicians and production teams\, all of whom have brought their best work to the most important story that there is – a story that could not be more universal or more timely.”—David Attenborough \nFour billion years. Millions of species. Five mass extinction events (and counting). It’s the story of Life on Our Planet. From the Emmy® Award-winning team behind Netflix’s Our Planet series\, comes a new natural history speaker series event: The Making of Our Planet. Brought to you by Silverback Films and Producer esk. in association with Netflix\, The Making of Our Planet is a new and immersive live show featuring behind-the-scenes stories from the explorers\, filmmakers\, scientists\, and adventurers that created some of the most eye-catching footage of our planet. Join us live on stage as we bring to life these stories from the natural world. With a focus on climate fragility and climate migration\, The Making of Our Planet tells an unprecedented story about overcoming obstacles on a global scale and explores the messages at the heart of these action-packed\, emotional\, and unforgettable sequences. \nFrozen Worlds \nThe unforgiving frontier of climate change. The calving of a gigantic iceberg or the risks of fossil fuel exploration in the arctic are never far from our news screens. Yet what does it mean for those that live there? Join us as we follow polar bears\, walruses\, seals and penguins as they find their icy Edens in peril. Brought to you by the speakers\, adventurers and explorers that have joined the tradition of the polar explorer and returned to tell us why this frozen frontier is vital for our planet. \nSophie Lanfear \nEmmy-Award winning Producer/Director Sophie Lanfear first developed a passion for the natural world and the Polar Regions following her childhood in the Norwegian Arctic. She has earned a reputation for having the tenacity and resilience it takes to film in some of the most extreme and remote locations in the world. She produced and directed Frozen Worlds\, part of the Netflix Our Planet series: winning an Emmy-award for her work. It is one of the most pressing stories of our time\, that people understand the value of the polar regions and realize what the consequences of climate change are doing to them. Since Our Planet\, Sophie has spent the last 5 years producing/directing 2 episodes of Life on Our Planet\, where her arctic knowledge came to the fore once more in her season finale: Chapter 8 -Age of Ice and Fire. It was important to end the series with a greater understanding about the 6th mass extinction we are causing\, as well as what the future might hold without us here. \nJoshua Jones \nJoshua Jones has spent the past 30 years working on the ocean—as a mariner\, fisherman\, and scientist. He holds a PhD in Biological Oceanography from UC San Diego\, where he leads an Arctic marine mammal research program at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. \nJosh works closely with Inuit local and regional resource managers to study how changing ocean conditions and increased human activity—especially shipping—are impacting Arctic whales and seals. His research integrates technology\, ecology\, and community-led ocean observation to inform decision-making on marine resources and wildlife. \nHe directed and produced Whales: Voices in the Sea\, an interactive exhibit shown in nine U.S. aquariums\, and founded SeaTech\, a research and training program that provides research internship opportunities for high school students from Alaska to California. \nJosh also serves as principal scientific advisor to several contemporary classical music projects with UC San Diego composer Lei Liang\, providing ocean acoustic data for works including Arctic: Six Seasons and Inaudible Ocean\, which bring the ocean to listeners through immersive musical experiences.

SUMMARY:La Mezcla
DESCRIPTION:“By the end of 90 ear-teasing\, hip-shaking minutes\, two things were clear: La Mezcla Artistic Director and choreographer Vanessa Sanchez ranks among the most singular dance artists to emerge from San Francisco in decades. Second\, this defiantly joyous production… deserves to be seen across the country.”—Rachel Howard\, San Francisco Chronicle \nGhostly Labor is a multidisciplinary\, rhythmic performance that explores the history of labor in the US-Mexico borderlands and the joy of collective resistance. This work brings together Tap Dance\, Mexican Zapateado\, Afro Caribbean movement\, live music and animated archival video. Featuring an all female dance company\, spoken word\, traditional Son Jarocho music from Veracruz\, Mexico and an Afro-Latinx percussive score\, this full length dance theater production highlights historical events\, such as the Bath Riots of 1917\, the experiences of farm workers and domestic workers throughout California\, and generations of labor that have gone unseen.  \nLa Mezcla is a polyrhythmic\, San Francisco-based dance and music ensemble rooted in Chicana\, Latina and Indigenous traditions and social justice. Founded in 2015 by Dance/USA fellow Vanessa Sanchez\, their work brings together Tap dance\, Son Jarocho and Afro-Caribbean rhythms to bring the often unseen histories and experiences of communities of color to stages\, streets and fields. Their production Pachuquísmo\, an all-womxn Tap dance and Son Jarocho performance about Pachucas and the Zoot Suit Riots\, received the Isadora Duncan Award for Outstanding Production. The show has toured nationally to venues including Dance Place (DC)\, Jacob’s Pillow (MA) and the Lincoln Center (NY)\, and made its international debut at Festival Cervantino in Guanajuato\, Mexico in October 2023. La Mezcla’s new work Ghostly Labor\, explores the legacy of labor in the US-Mexico borderlands and the joy of collective resistance\, and will tour the US through 2025. The associated film Ghostly Labor: a Dance Film has been screened internationally at film festivals\, and was named Best Short Documentary at the Los Angeles Dance Camera West Festival. \nCommitted to using dance and music for social change\, La Mezcla offers paid internships\, artist mentorships\, and has partnered with organizations including Lincoln Center Education\, KQED Arts\, and Ayudando Latinos a Soñar Farmworker Fridays to provide educational opportunities and hands-on community engagement. SUMMARY:Las Cafeteras
DESCRIPTION:“Hasta La Muerte” is an enthralling new production celebrating Life and Death\, in the spirit of the Indigenous/Mexican practice\, known as Day of the Dead. \nFrom the imagination of Las Cafeteras\, “Hasta La Muerte” is a 2 act\, multi-dimensional theatrical and musical performance that explores the stages of grief and loss through the celebration of life and death. The production revisits Mexican folklore to tell new stories\, engage old archetypes\, challenge patriarchy\, uplift the role of curanderas and re-examine our imagination about “death” and the “after-life.” \nHasta La Muerte showcases mesmerizing choreography\, poetry\, combined with a score of original and traditional songs\, to showcase a night of transcendent color\, sound and a moving invitation to travel through time\, rhythm and memory. \nHasta La Muerte is a work that embraces the power of storytelling\, as a form of processing grief\, and sharing love with those in the beyond. Love\, not sadness\, allows us to celebrate and remember those that have gone and remember that “death is not the end\, it is just the beginning.” \nLas Cafeteras have taken the music scene by storm with their infectious live performances and have crossed many genres and borders along the way. Their electric sound & energy has taken them around the world playing shows from Bonnaroo to the Hollywood Bowl\, WOMAD New Zealand to Montreal Jazz\, & beyond! \nBorn and raised East of the Los Angeles River\, Las Cafeteras are remixing roots music as modern day troubadours.  They are a sonic explosion of Afro-Mexican rhythms\, electronic beats and powerful rhymes that document stories of a community seeking to ‘build a world where many world fit.’ \nFrom Afro-Mexican to Americana\, from Soul to Son Jarocho\, from Roots to Rock and Hip Hop\, Las Cafeteras take folk music to the future. \nLas Cafeteras honor the past by using electrifying traditional instrumentation like the 8 string Jarana\, 4 string Requinto\, Quijada (donkey jawbone) and Tarima (a wooden platform). Las Cafeteras sing in 5 distinct languages\, English\, Spanish\, Spanglish\, Love and Justice … and they believe everyone understands at least one of those languages. \nThey’ve performed in the good company of Mexican icons Café Tacuba\, Natalia LaFourcade\, Lila Downs\, Gypsy Kings\, Colombian superstar Juanes\, Hip Hop artist Common\, Los Angeles legends Ozomatli and Los Lobos\, performing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra\, and many more. \n \nCampus Partner

SUMMARY:I'm With Her | Wild & Clear & Blue
DESCRIPTION:Opener: Jon Muq\nWith the 2014 formation of I’m With Her\, singer/songwriters Sarah Jarosz\, Aoife O’Donovan\, and Sara Watkins introduced an essential new force into the world of folk music: a close-knit alliance of highly esteemed musicians\, each graced with a deep understanding of folk tradition and unbridled passion for expanding its possibilities. Since delivering their critically lauded debut See You Around and standalone singles like “Call My Name” (winner of the 2020 Grammy for Best American Roots Song)\, the trio have routinely taken time out from their individual careers to dream up songs together—eventually arriving at a new album exploring themes of ancestry\, lineage\, and the collective human experience. On their long-awaited sophomore LP Wild and Clear and Blue\, I’m With Her now bring their luminous harmonies to a soul-searching body of work about reaching into the past\, navigating a chaotic present\, and bravely moving forward into the unknown. \nIn a departure from the stripped-back intimacy of See You Around—a 2018 release that turned up on best-of-the-year lists from the likes of the New York Times—Wild and Clear and Blue centers on a far more elaborate sound informed by the trio’s intensified sense of musical kinship. All multi-Grammy-winners with deep roots in the folk scene\, Watkins\, Jarosz\, and O’Donovan first discovered their near-telepathic chemistry during an impromptu performance at the 2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival\, then co-founded I’m With Her and began touring extensively and performing at acclaimed festivals across the globe. \nProduced by Josh Kaufman—a member of Bonny Light Horseman and multi-instrumentalist/songwriter/arranger/producer who’s worked with Bob Weir and The National—Wild and Clear and Blue ultimately adds a bold new urgency to their delicate entangling of lived-in narrative\, fable-like storytelling\, and nuanced reflection on cycles of life.

SUMMARY:Celebrate Ameri’KANA
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, due to circumstances beyond our control\, the concert has been canceled. At this time\, there is no information regarding rescheduling. The Box Office will contact all ticket holders directly. If you haven’t received any communication\, please email boxoffice@ucsd.edu to review your options. \nFounded by the Latin Grammy-nominated band Making Movies\, Celebrate AMERI’KANA is a traveling festival celebrating the diverse colors of American music. Looking to redefine “Americana\,” the festival highlights the crossroads of languages and rhythms that shape the musical identity of the Americas. \nThis year\, the festival welcomes Rubén Albarrán\, the legendary frontman of Café Tacvba and one of Latin America’s most influential and innovative artists. For over three decades\, Rubén has shaped the sound of Latin rock\, blending traditional Mexican music with alternative rock\, electronic\, and experimental styles—pushing artistic boundaries at every turn. With a voice Billboard calls “a multifaceted wonder\,” Rubén has captivated audiences around the world\, whether delivering a piercing ballad\, an explosive punk chorus\, or an electrifying DJ set. \nBeyond his iconic work with Café Tacvba\, Rubén has collaborated with artists like Calle 13\, Natalia Lafourcade\, Julieta Venegas\, and Gustavo Santaolalla. Under his DJ moniker Pinche Pinchadiscos\, he brings that same boundary-defying spirit to the dance floor\, spinning global beats with the energy and theatricality that have defined his career. From massive festivals like Rock al Parque and Ruido Fest to sold-out club nights in Berlin and Bogotá\, Rubén’s performances are celebrations of rhythm\, resistance\, and cultural pride. \nMaking Movies is a band based in the United States with a sound Rolling Stone describes as “an eclectic blend of rumbero percussions\, delicate organs\, and grungy fuzz rock.” Led by Panamanian singer/guitarist Enrique Chi\, Mexican-American percussionist and keyboardist Juan-Carlos Chaurand\, and drummer Duncan Burnett\, the band rose to acclaim through a decade of relentless touring in the US and Latin America. \nThe band collaborated with Rubén Blades on the single “No Te Calles\,” which NPR included in their Best of 2019 list and became the opening track of his album Paraiso Road Gang\, nominated for Latin Grammy Album of the Year. They’ve also toured alongside Los Lobos\, Ozomatli\, Hurray For the Riff Raff\, Thievery Corporation\, and more. \nLa Lulu\, a Latin Grammy-winning violinist\, vocalist\, and dancer whose explosive stage presence channels the soul of cumbia through a New York lens. Born in Cali\, Colombia and raised in NYC\, La Lulu fuses salsa\, spanglish rhymes\, and unapologetic energy into music that is both deeply rooted and fiercely contemporary.
